Wax provides a secure seal and barrier, far superior to a regular bottle wrap. Wax wine bottle seals also help customers distinguish between our regular wines and our reserve wines.
The wax seal stems from both tradition and necessity. Before corks were used, wax was one means of sealing wine bottles for storage and shipment. Even after corks became the standard, they were often unreliable. Wine would leak out and oxygen would sneak in, harming the wine, so wax was used to create a stronger, more airtight seal, particularly for bottles meant for longer aging.
You’ve mastered the cork, dominated the screw top, but when it comes to a wax sealed wine bottle, you’re at a loss. Instead of busting out the blow torch or power drill, and panic sweating as you attempt to not-so-gracefully pop that cork, try following these 3 simple steps the next time you need to open a wax seal.
Step 1: Cut the wax
Damian shows how to hold the foil knife at an angle and rotating the bottle as he cuts just the corner of the wax. Once you’ve made your way around the top of the bottle, the remaining wax on top of the cork may come off easily. Don’t forget to close the blade before continuing!
Step 2: Insert the corkscrew
If the wax is stuck to the top of the cork, you can insert the corkscrew straight into the piece of wax, driving it through the wax and into the cork. It’s often easier to rotate the bottle while holding the corkscrew in place, rather than trying to twist the corkscrew.
Step 3: Pull the cork
Now you’re ready to uncork the bottle! Use the two stages to pull the cork, and get ready to pour and enjoy your wine! Whether you are simply opening a bottle to enjoy with dinner, or hosting a Wine Tasting at Home, this technique will make the process easy so you can enjoy your wine!
If a piece of wax falls inside the bottle, not to worry; just pour a taste of the wine quickly and decisively into the glass. The wax should fall right into the glass with that first taste, allowing you to remove it before serving the rest of the bottle. Alternatively, pour the wine into a decanter through a cheesecloth.
